Palestine

Over 300 days of genocide in Gaza.

Over the past 300 days, we have witnessed a relentless violation of human rights and a blatant disregard for international humanitarian law, resulting in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis. The situation in Gaza remains extremely volatile, with entire neighbourhoods reduced to rubble and abhorrent killings continuing, resulting in the death of over 40,000 Palestiniains.

Humanitarian Impact:

Mass Displacement: Over 1.7 million are internally displaced, more than 1 million of whom are women and children. Leaving civilians to seek refuge in overcrowded shelters, schools and hospitals- which have been targeted, causing further casualties and leaving people with nowhere to go.

Food insecurity: Israel’s ongoing bombardments and blockades have cut off essential supplies of food, water, and medicine, pushing the entire population to the brink of famine and causing widespread dehydration and starvation amid continuous displacement.

Gaza’s healthcare system has collapsed amid the ongoing conflict: Due to the unrelenting attacks on hospitals and clinics, the health care system has collapsed, leaving those in dire need of medical aid unable to access treatment.

Mass casualties: According to the official Health Ministry, over 40,000 people have been killed. However, this number is largely understated as many civilians are still missing under the rubble, which according to a study published in the journal Lancet could mean that the true death toll could reach more than 186,000 people.

Sudan

Sudan urgently needs our attention and our action.

Sudan is currently experiencing a severe and escalating crisis due to ongoing and violent conflict gripping the country. Resulting in a catastrophic humanitarian situation and one of the most severe internal displacement crises worldwide. The situation is dire, with 25 million people currently in desperate need of aid.

Humanitarian Impact:

Mass displacement: As of August 2024, an estimated 10.7 million people have been internally displaced, with women and girls constituting 53% o of those affected.  An additional 1.5 million people have fled to neighbouring countries since the conflict escalated in April 2023.

Food insecurity: Approximately 25.6 million people—over half of Sudan’s population—are grappling with acute food insecurity. Among them more than 730, 000 children are facing severe acute malnutrition.

Education system in crisis: 19 million children are out of school, impacting 1 in every 3 children in the country. Over 10,000 schools have now shut down in conflict- affected areas. (UNICEF October 2023)

Gender based violence: More than 6.7 million people in Sudan are at risk of gender-based violence. With women and girls being targeted and at risk of sexual violence, kidnapping and forced marriage.

Sudan’s healthcare system has collapsed amid the ongoing conflict: Currently, approximately 65% of Sudan’s population lacks access to healthcare, including 3.5 million women and girls who are in urgent need of reproductive health care services. In conflict-affected regions, 70% to 80% of hospitals are non-operational, resulting in a dramatic rise in preventable diseases, widespread suffering, and elevated mortality rates.

Keep talking about Sudan!

As we approach one year since this devastating conflict began, the world knows next-to-nothing about the full extent of the atrocities that are committed daily. Nothing is worse than seeing how truth has been suspended, like a patient sedated indefinitely. (Hussein, M. (2024, February 20). The horror of war in Sudan: A journalist’s perspective. The New Humanitarian)

It is crucial that we as a community, play our part and raise awareness and continue talking about the current situation in Sudan. The voices of those suffering are often silenced or unheard- share information about the crisis with your friends, family and social media to raise awareness & amplify their voices.

Additionally, we must amplify and centre the voices of the Sudanese community, as they highlight firsthand experiences of the crisis. For a list of social media accounts to keep an eye on head to: AMWCHR (@amwchr) • Instagram photos and videos
